Signs you've got rats

Droppings
Dark, spindle-shaped droppings along walls, in cupboards, sheds or feed rooms.
Noises after dark
Scratching or scurrying in walls, ceilings and under floors — usually within an hour of dusk.
Gnaw marks
Fresh damage to wood, plastic pipes, cables and feed bags. Rats must gnaw constantly.
Runs and smears
Worn paths along fence lines and walls, with greasy smear marks at ground level.
Burrows
Fresh holes (5–8 cm) near compost, decking, sheds and muck heaps.
Sightings in daylight

Why no poison?

Rodenticides put everything else at risk: dogs and cats that find a dying rat, owls and foxes further up the chain, horses and poultry near baited areas. Poisoned rats also die in walls and under floors — the smell can last weeks.
